Language Placement Test
You can earn up to twelve credit hours for language skills by taking the language placement test and completing the course into which you place. If you took foreign language classes in high school, learned languages while abroad or at home, you should take this free exam. You may take the placement test if you do not already have college language credit. The adaptive computerized exam for French, German, Spanish, Russian, and Italian takes about 20 minutes, and you will find out immediately the course level in which you need to enroll. Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, and Latin are available upon request. After completing the recommended course with a grade of C- or better, you must contact our Department to report successful completion of the course. The Department will then contact Admissions to enter credit for the courses that preceded the completed class in the world language sequence.
The placement exams may be taken by contacting the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. Please contact Charlie Vick (Charlie.Vick@mtsu.edu) to take a placement exam.
Did you know that with previous language experience a World Language major or minor — a valuable component of your degree — is within reach? For example, if you place into Spanish 3010, once you have completed SPAN 3010 (with a grade of C- or better) you are only two courses away from a Spanish minor.
Your placement result can be found on PipelineMT under Test Score (registration tab). Please see the Test Score Chart below for the appropriate course to enroll in.
